— ABOUT THIS SERIES

Six Wives, and Everything Around Them

Most people arrive at Tudor history through Henry VIII’s marriages and stop there. It is a shame, because the marriages are the least interesting thing about the period.

Sarah Morris gave us a complete crash course — the whole dynasty, start to finish, in one sitting, for anyone who wants the shape of it before the detail. Adam Pennington told the story of the Poles, the rival royal family Henry VIII spent years trying to erase, including a seventy-year-old countess executed on Tower Green. Heather Teysko, who has been making Tudor podcasts since long before podcasting was respectable, talked about obsession, community and what keeps people coming back to the sixteenth century.

Beyond the Tudors, the thread runs forward. Jane Tippett took on the abdication crisis and the uncomfortable question of what Edward VIII actually was. We told the story of Catherine of Braganza, the Portuguese queen who arrived in England with a chest of tea and changed the country’s habits permanently. And when Elizabeth II died, we recorded an episode about why so many Americans mourned a monarch who was never theirs.
