— ABOUT THIS SERIES

How Most of Us Got Here

Ask an American Anglophile how it started and the answer is almost always a television programme. A costume drama on a Sunday night, a sitcom found late, a detective series that made a county look like somewhere you had to see.

So we talk about it a lot. Our bonus Great British Telly episode is the long version — Monty Python through to Downton Abbey and beyond, with the connective tissue in between. We’ve done the practical side too: the various ways to watch British television legally from the United States, which changes often enough to be worth revisiting.

Individual shows get their own hours when they earn it. Red Dwarf got one, on how a low-budget science fiction sitcom became an institution. Tom Salinsky joined us for British Christmas television, which is a genuine cultural form rather than just scheduling. Tom Burdett explained what Downton and Clarkson’s Farm have done to the Cotswolds.

And because film is the other half of it, a British cinema scholar took us through what actually makes British films feel British — beyond the accents and the weather.
