From the Anglotopia Podcast: Episode 19
Welcome back to the Anglotopia Podcast! We’re Jackie and Jonathan Thomas—Mr. and Mrs. Anglotopia—and we’re thrilled to bring you a brand new season of the podcast. It’s been a minute, hasn’t it? After a bit of a break, we’re dedicated to bringing the podcast back and releasing episodes regularly. This is more than just a return—it’s a reboot, a fresh start, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead.
In today’s episode, we’re catching up on everything that’s been happening in the Anglotopia universe over the past six months. If you’ve visited our website recently, you’ve probably noticed some significant changes. We’ll explain what’s new and why these updates are fantastic for our readers. We’ll also dive into an exciting London-themed Lego contest (hence all the Lego on the table—it’s not just set dressing!), discuss the growing library of Anglotopia books, and share our thoughts on some compelling recent British television.
So pour yourself a cup of tea—we’re serving Britannia tea from Cornish Tea in our beloved London Underground tea set purchased on a trip 10 years ago—and let’s dive in.
Big Changes at Anglotopia: A New Chapter
The past six months have brought significant changes to Anglotopia, and they all stem from one key development: we both have more time to dedicate to the business. Changes in our work situations mean we can finally focus on growing the website and expanding what we offer to our community of Anglophiles.
This isn’t just about doing more of the same—it’s about doing things better, creating more value for readers, and building the kind of comprehensive British culture resource we’ve always dreamed of creating.
Website Improvements and Reader Experience
If you’ve visited Anglotopia recently, you’ve seen the changes. We’ve been working hard to improve the user experience, organize content more effectively, and make it easier for readers to find what they’re looking for. These updates aren’t just cosmetic—they’re designed to make your time on the site more enjoyable and productive.
The website improvements include better navigation, improved search functionality, more organized content categories, and a cleaner overall design that puts the focus where it belongs: on the amazing British culture, history, and travel content our readers love.
Growing the Business Through Engagement
One of our new initiatives this year is running a series of contests and sweepstakes. We’re not just doing this for the fun of it (though it is fun!)—these contests help us connect with our community, reward loyal readers, and introduce new people to Anglotopia.
Our first contest gave away a year’s supply of Cornish Tea—over 400 tea bags plus tea paraphernalia. It was crazy popular, and the winner is probably still drinking their way through that massive tea stash. Cheers to them!
The London Lego Contest: Win Big British Style
For our second quarterly contest, we wanted to top that first prize, and we think we’ve done it. Lego recently released a gorgeous red London phone box set—a massive build with a couple thousand pieces that perfectly captures one of Britain’s most iconic symbols. It’s beautiful, substantial, and the kind of Lego set that makes you want to drop everything and start building immediately.
But we didn’t stop there. Lego has several other London-themed sets, and we’re giving them all away as one grand prize package:
The Prize Package Includes:
- The London Red Phone Box (the centerpiece—over 2,000 pieces)
- London Architecture set featuring the London Eye and skyline
- Lego Creator London bus postcard scene
- The classic little red London bus
Four complete Lego sets, all London-themed, all going to one lucky winner.
How to Enter and Increase Your Chances
This contest is specifically designed to promote Londontopia (more on that in a moment), so there’s a London theme throughout. The primary way to enter is simple: sign up for the Londontopia weekly newsletter.
This newsletter goes out every Thursday and includes:
- Latest articles about London
- New events in our comprehensive events guide
- Updated tourist attractions in our attractions guide
- Everything you need to stay connected to London news and culture
But here’s where it gets interesting. We know some people like to enter contests multiple times (we notice—trust us, we notice!). So we’re using new contest software that legitimately allows you to earn additional entries. Here are 10 ways to enter:

Londontopia: A Deeper Dive Into the Capital
You might be wondering: what exactly is Londontopia, and why are we emphasizing it now?
Londontopia has always been part of the Anglotopia family, but we’re expanding it significantly. London is the gateway to Britain for most travelers—it’s where most people start their British journey, where the majority of visitors spend their time, and where there’s an endless supply of history, culture, attractions, and experiences to explore.
We realized that London deserves its own dedicated space, its own focused attention. So we’re building Londontopia into a comprehensive London resource that goes beyond what we can do on the main Anglotopia site.
What Makes Londontopia Special
Londontopia isn’t just another section of Anglotopia—it’s a standalone destination for London enthusiasts. We’re creating:
Comprehensive Guides:
- Detailed attraction guides covering everything from major museums to hidden gems
- An events calendar keeping you updated on what’s happening in London
- Neighborhood guides helping you explore beyond the tourist zones
- Restaurant and pub recommendations
- Shopping guides for everything from department stores to independent boutiques
Regular Content:
- Weekly newsletters with curated London content
- Articles about London history, culture, and contemporary life
- Travel tips specifically for navigating the capital
- Updates on new openings, closures, and changes
Community Focus:
- A place for London lovers to connect
- Reader stories and experiences
- Q&A sections addressing common London questions
- Resources for both first-time visitors and London veterans
The goal is to make Londontopia the go-to resource for anyone interested in London, whether they’re planning their first trip, their fiftieth visit, or they just love reading about the city from afar.
The Anglotopia Book Library: A Growing Collection

Why Books Matter
In an age of digital content, you might wonder why we invest so much energy in creating books. The answer is simple: books create lasting value. They’re physical objects people treasure, reference repeatedly, and share with fellow Anglophiles. They endure in ways that digital content sometimes doesn’t.
Each book serves our community differently. The travel guides offer practical, actionable advice. The cultural books provide context and deeper understanding. The memoirs inspire and entertain. Together, they form a comprehensive library for anyone passionate about Britain.
We’re constantly working on new titles, expanding the collection, and finding new ways to share British culture through the written word. When you purchase an Anglotopia book, you’re not just buying information—you’re supporting our ability to keep creating content, traveling to Britain, and sharing those experiences with our community.
British Television Worth Watching: Two Very Different Shows
We couldn’t let an episode pass without discussing some compelling British television. We’ve recently been watching two shows that, while completely different, are both quintessentially British and absolutely worth your time.
The Gentlemen: Not What You’d Expect
The Gentlemen is Netflix’s series based on Guy Ritchie’s film of the same name. Before we dive in, let’s address the elephant in the room: this is not Bridgerton. It’s not Downton Abbey. If you’re looking for period costumes, tea parties, and polite society, look elsewhere.
This is what we’re calling the “anti-Bridgerton”—it takes the British aristocracy setting and completely subverts it. The show centers on Eddie, who inherits his father’s aristocratic estate only to discover it comes with a thriving marijuana growing operation hidden beneath the grounds. Suddenly, he’s pulled into the criminal underworld while trying to maintain his family’s aristocratic standing.
What Makes It Compelling:
The Setting: Gorgeous English countryside, beautiful stately homes, stunning landscapes—it’s visually everything you want from a British show.
The Subversion: It takes aristocratic tropes and turns them upside down. These aren’t your typical period drama aristocrats.
The Characters: Nobody phoned it in. Every character is well-developed, interesting, and layered. You find yourself rooting for people you wouldn’t normally support, and questioning people who seem sympathetic.
Susie Glass: The show features a powerful female character running a criminal operation while her father is in prison (though “prison” is generous—he’s basically living at a Club Med). Her character is strong, complex, and commands respect. The actress brings real depth to the role.
The Ensemble: From the reverend to the various family members and criminal associates, every character is rich and fully realized.
Fair Warning:
This show gets violent. It’s rated TV-MA for good reasons. There’s strong language, criminal activity, and situations that won’t appeal to everyone. But if you can handle those elements, you’re in for a treat of excellent British storytelling with unexpected twists and memorable characters.
It’s funny, tense, beautifully shot, and thoroughly British in ways that have nothing to do with tea and scones. If you’re tired of typical British period dramas and want something that shakes up the formula, The Gentlemen delivers.
Clarkson’s Farm: The Show That Conquered the World
If someone had told us that a show about Jeremy Clarkson—the controversial Top Gear host—running a farm in the Cotswolds would become Amazon Prime’s most popular show ever, we might have been skeptical. But that’s exactly what Clarkson’s Farm has become, and with good reason.
The Premise:
A few years ago, Jeremy Clarkson bought a farm in the Cotswolds and named it Diddly Squat Farm because, as he says, that’s how much money it makes him. He convinced Amazon to make a show about his farming adventures, they filmed during the pandemic, and lightning struck. The show became more popular than The Grand Tour, more popular than anything else Amazon has made. Season three just dropped, and it’s as compelling as ever.
What Makes It Work:
Authenticity: This is a genuine look at the challenges farmers face in Britain. Farmer friends in England love the show because it accurately portrays their struggles and triumphs.
The Cast of Characters:
- Caleb: The young tractor driver who actually knows what he’s doing
- Gerald: The stone wall repair expert who nobody can understand
- Lisa Hogan: Jeremy’s girlfriend, who has great chemistry with him and isn’t afraid to call him out
- Jeremy himself: Playing his bumbling, overconfident persona while genuinely caring about the farm
The Cinematography: If you’ve watched Top Gear, you know they film everything cinematically. Clarkson’s Farm brings that aesthetic to farming. The Cotswolds landscapes are shot so beautifully—rolling hills, golden fields, wildlife, changing seasons—that you want to inject it into your veins. In 4K on a big screen, it’s transportive.
The Heart: Jeremy genuinely cares about his farm. He’s not just extracting economic value—he cares about the landscape, the wildlife, creating a nice place to live. That sincerity comes through.
The Comedy: Whether it’s Jeremy’s disasters, the running battles with planning authorities, or the interactions between characters, the show is genuinely funny.
Season Three Updates:
The new season dials back the planning permission battles that dominated season two (though they’re still present) and focuses more on farming, comedy, and those gorgeous landscapes. There’s an episode with piglets that’s surprisingly compelling—we never thought we’d be emotionally invested in baby pigs, but here we are.
They’re filming season four right now, so we’ll have this show for a while longer—at least until Jeremy gets sick of farming or achieves his elusive profitability.
Why It Matters:
Clarkson’s Farm works even if you’re not a Jeremy Clarkson fan (Jackie isn’t particularly) and even if you have zero interest in farming. It’s compelling television that happens to be about farming, shot in one of Britain’s most beautiful regions, featuring characters you care about facing real challenges.
Looking Ahead: The Future of the Anglotopia Podcast
This episode marks the beginning of a new season of the podcast, and we have big plans. We’re not just bringing back the show—we’re evolving it into something better.
Regular Releases and Seasonal Structure
We’re committed to releasing episodes regularly, organized into seasons. This structure allows us to plan better, maintain quality, and ensure you can expect new content on a predictable schedule. We’re not announcing the exact schedule yet—we need to see what works and what doesn’t—but you can expect consistency throughout each season.
The seasonal approach also lets us take breaks between seasons to recharge, plan the next batch of episodes, and incorporate feedback from listeners and viewers.
Exciting Guest Episodes Coming
Here’s what we’re most excited about: we’re bringing guests onto the podcast. Not physically here in our studio (we’re still figuring that out), but through new podcasting software that makes remote interviews easy and high-quality.
We’ve already had conversations with several compelling potential guests:
Upcoming Guests Include:
- A bestselling author eager to discuss her latest book
- Travel experts specializing in different regions of Britain
- Cultural experts with deep knowledge of British history and traditions
- Possibly some surprises we can’t reveal yet
The goal is to bring diverse voices and perspectives to the podcast, covering topics and areas of British culture that we might not have personal expertise in. These guests will add depth and variety to the show while maintaining our focus on creating positive, enjoyable content about British travel, history, and culture.
We Want Your Input
If you have ideas for guests—someone who would be great on the Anglotopia Podcast—let us know. We’re actively recruiting guests for the rest of this season and into the next. Similarly, if you have topic ideas or questions you’d like us to address, share them. We want this podcast to serve our community and bring you content you actually want to hear.
